Juan Carlos’s Story

The story of Juan Carlos, our former client who is now a wheelchair sports champion.

In 2005, Juan Carlos and his Mother Vivian arrived in Toronto, sponsored by the Mennonite Church. MNLCT received the family and offered settlement services to the mother and child including securing Juan, who was born with Spina Bifida, his first ever wheelchair.

The family is settled and now living in Windsor, Ontario. Juan, the little boy we met almost two decades ago is still as amazing as when we first saw him. What has changed over the years, is the growth and development of a young man who refused to let his disability confine his passions.

Juan grew a keen interest in sports and is now a wheelchair basketball champion as well as a gold medalist in wheelchair cycling.

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we share with you the story of Juan Carlos, whose life our services impacted. He shares about his life as a newcomer, his passion for sports, and his dreams.
